What Lionel Messi did in Barcelona dressing room after Liverpool Champions League disaster
Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League in shock scenes at Anfield on Tuesday evening.
The Spanish giants had come into the match as a sure bet to progress into the final, having won their semi-final first leg 3-0.
However, it wasn’t to be for the Catalan club, as Liverpool produced yet another night of magic in Europe.
It’s fair to say several Barca players took the defeat pretty hard - but none more so than star man Messi.
The Argentine had spoken publicly about his desire to win a fifth Champions League.
Barca had already locked up the La Liga title the previous weekend after a superb season that has seen them lose just three times.
However, what was so nearly a fairytale season for La Blaugrana ended in tears - for Messi at least.
The Argentine was reduced to tears on the pitch after Liverpool completed their sensational comeback.
He was seen with his head in his hands, wiping away tears on the Anfield turf.
But it seems the real breakdown came when he got back to the changing room.
According to the Guardian, Messi was “inconsolable” as he and his team-mates were left reeling by one of the greatest comebacks in European history.
Things didn’t get any better as they night went on for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner either.
The Barca skipper was left behind by the team bus after being selected for a random drugs test.
And according to Spanish media, Messi was then greeted at Liverpool John Lennon Airport by a group of angry Barcelona fans, who were livid at seeing their side capitulate.
Team-mate Luis Suarez described how the loss had affected the Barca camp, insisting they were all hurting.
“We are very sad, hurt,” he said. “We are human beings, we feel the pain, the frustration. We have to put our chest out for the bullets that will come now.”
